Study Food and Nutrition and Help Women Fight Heart Disease

Each state has a Department of Health that is responsible for developing and rolling out a variety of public health programs. Food and nutrition school may prepare you for a career working in a state-run health department.

The Centers for Disease Control has recognized many state Department of Health programs that have been successful in targeting groups at risk of suffering from serious health problems. One of those programs targets women at risk for heart disease.

The Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago (CHIC) prepares more students in the Chicago area for successful careers in food service than any other culinary school — using the traditional, European hands-on approach to culinary education that was previously difficult to obtain in the Midwest. Affiliated with the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu, CHIC combines classical cooking techniques with leading-edge American technology.

Connecticut's Nutrition and Physical Activity Program

According to the CDC, more than half of all people in the United States who suffer from cardiovascular disease are women. The Connecticut Department of Health decided to target this group through the Connecticut WISEWOMAN Program. The stated goal of the program was to increase the number of insured women who took advantage of free screenings for risk factors associated with heart disease. Tailoring their outreach efforts based on feedback from focus groups, the state increased public participation in the program by 25 percent.

If you can imagine yourself working for a public health program such as WISEWOMAN, you may be interested in earning a degree in food and nutrition.

Pursuing a Career in Food and Nutrition

Food and nutrition school may prepare you for a career working to improve public health. In a food and nutrition school, you will develop the expertise needed to fashion programs that can help specific groups improve their health or reduce their risk of experiencing health problems through improved nutrition and smarter food choices. Having the expertise in food and nutrition combined with program management skills could prove valuable to those interested in a career in the public health sector.
