Catering Training Gives You the Pick of Catering Jobs

Pastry Chef by Jane Smallman
Chef School Review Columnist

The catering industry covers a wide spectrum of organizations, from high-class restaurants and hotels to your local school or hospital. The variety of jobs available is equally varied, so if you are interested in a career in catering make sure you choose the right training for the jobs you want.

Due to population growth, higher spending power, and increases in dining sophistication, it is predicted that the food services and drinking industry will go through a period of growth until around 2012. This means that there will be an increase in catering jobs. Employees who have the appropriate catering training are most likely to succeed.

Combine your love of food with hands-on training from the best instructors in the business at Florida Culinary Institute.

Where Will the New Catering Jobs Be Found?

  • Moderately priced restaurants offering table service will contribute to the increase in catering jobs. They will expand to meet the growing needs of families with young children and older people.
  • Companies involved in food preparation. New catering jobs will be created anywhere that food is prepared, to meet increased consumer demand for convenience food and ready-to-heat meals.
  • Fine dining establishments that appeal to the over-45 age group. As this affluent group grows, more catering jobs will be created to meet their needs; this means that the demand for employees with the right sort of catering training, such as skilled chefs, head cooks, waiters and waitresses is expected to grow faster than overall employment in the catering industry.

What Sort of Catering Training is Best for Career Success?

The US Bureau of Labor has found that employers now prefer to hire people who have had some sort of specialized catering training. Anyone who has graduated from a college catering program should have especially good opportunities.

Suitable catering programs would include a certificate, associate's, or bachelor's degree in any of the following:
  • Restaurant Management
  • Culinary Arts
  • Hospitality Management
  • Hotel Catering and Institutional Management
