If You Bake It, They Will Come
Sandra always dreamed of becoming a gourmet chef, but most of the jobs for which she applied wanted to see credentials and work experience. She had neither. Worse yet, she knew very little about cooking. But she had one thing going for her-- determination.
Guerrilla Culinary School
Although chef jobs demand a long list of qualifications, Sandra could not afford to attend a full-time culinary school. However, she had enough money to take some classes and seminars through online education. And fortunately, a few of her friends had also taken classes. Thus, over the course of two years, she hosted countless potluck dinners at her tiny Manhattan apartment. Whenever one of her friends brought over a dish she enjoyed, she begged for the recipe and would spend time perfecting it. Sandra honed her skills and knowledge that she had received from her initial culinary school training with her perseverance and dedication to cooking.
The Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago
(CHIC) prepares more students in the Chicago area for successful
careers in food service than any other culinary school using the
traditional, European hands-on approach to culinary education that was
previously difficult to obtain in the Midwest. Affiliated with the
prestigious Le Cordon Bleu, CHIC combines classical cooking techniques
with leading-edge American technology.
Piece of Cake
Over time, Sandra amassed an impressive portfolio of stunning dishes culled from every corner of the globe. When time and money permitted, she continued to take online courses to help her fine tune her skills. And because she was a regular at some of the wholesale food stores, she was able to get many of her supplies on the cheap. Sandra was ready for the next step: finding chef jobs.
Let Go My Ego
Many chefs are notoriously proud of their work, and she knew that few could resist an invitation to an awards ceremony if they were the guest of honor. However, all 50 chefs were guests of honor at the mock ceremony that Sandra organized. She had a captive audience to sample her buffet of amazing dishes, and when no awards were given, there was a lot of fuss over being bamboozled. But the delectability of the food made many chefs overlook the deception. By evening's end, Sandra had not one, but seven jobs offered to her. More surprisingly, however, twelve of the chefs begged her to open up her own culinary school.
