According to a BBC News report, the latest snack fad sweeping the Ukraine these days is pork fat covered in chocolate. Yes, that's right, pork fat covered in chocolate. Now the pork fat (called salo) is nothing new to Ukranians; they've been enjoying it for years with black bread, garlic, and, of course, vodka. But the head chef of one of Kiev's fanciest restaurants is apparently responsible for creating this new "delicacy".
Unconvinced? Just read the rave reviews:
"'It's salty on the inside and very sweet on the outside. It's unusual yes, but it's completely disgusting,' says Dasha Khabarova."
Oh well. Despite Dasha's review, "chocolate salo" has been well-received so far. But in a country known for its love of fatty foods -- the Ukraine has one of the highest death rates from heart disease in Europe -- that probably comes as no surprise.
