Catering Careers Beyond the Ordinary

When you think about a corporate or executive catering career, do you envision catering traditional breakfast or lunch meetings, company picnics, or corporate training? Think again—there are a number of intriguing catering jobs available in the film, TV, and fashion industries.

Celebrity Catering Careers

When you think about catering, think about preparing breakfast in China for Tom Cruise and the cast and crew of Mission Impossible III or arranging a dinner buffet for a Vanity Fair magazine shoot featuring Jude Law. Picture yourself catering gourmet salads for a Tommy Hilfiger fragrance commercial photo op or creating delectable hors d’oeuvres for a jet setter on board a sleek Learjet.

Campaign Trail Catering

One large executive catering company in southern California welcomed the challenging job of feeding the news crews for seven TV networks at the Republican National Convention when it was held at the San Diego Convention Center several years ago. This monumental catering job required the catering experts to prepare 5,000 meals a day for almost two weeks.

Catering Careers on the Cowboy Trail

Tim Love, chef and owner of the award-winning Lonesome Dove Western Bistro in Fort Worth, has teamed up with five other chefs in a catering effort for Cowboys on the Trail, a Food Network TV special. Traveling by bus and horse, Love blazes a catering trail from Forth Worth to Los Angeles with stops in six cities including Santa Fe, Scottsdale, and Las Vegas.

Love gallops into farmer’s markets to buy locally grown produce. He then uses these fresh ingredients in unique western dishes, catering outdoor cookouts and fundraisers for Spoons Across America, an organization that sponsors children’s culinary education.

Whip up a New Catering Career

A corporate or executive catering job could find you on location for the next Hollywood action thriller or on the set of a TV show. You could find yourself part of a catering effort for a high fashion photo shoot or busy whipping up culinary creations in a large convention center, catering meals for thousands at a political event. A catering school can provide you with both the degree and practical experience you need to get started in the less traditional, but more provocative side of corporate and executive catering.
