You've probably already heard that Julia Child passed away on Thursday, just two days before her 92nd birthday. More than simply a famous TV chef or cookbook author, Child was an idol to numerous home cooks everywhere. Perhaps no one has been as responsible for inspiring more chefs (amateur or professional) than Julia Child.
Her "French Chef" cooking series on PBS started in 1963 and made her the first in a long line of TV chefs who would instruct and inspire Americans cooking at home. In an era when frozen dinners were rapidly becoming the norm, she emphasized taking your time in the kitchen to cook a real meal; and she did with a down-to-earth, friendly style that made her instantly appealing.
If you don't know much about Julia's life and career (or you just want to reminisce), here are a few links to get you started:
When reading through some of the many tributes that have been written over the past couple days, I came across this quote from Julia Child that should inspire any would-be chef or cook:
"The only real stumbling block (in the kitchen) is the fear of failure. In cooking, you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude."
We'll all miss Julia -- her humor, her grace, her kindness, and most of all, her "what-the-hell" attitude.
